Reducing Interference in 3D Imaging

This technique is a hardware or firmware-implementable solution targeted to commercial range imaging technologies. The technique produces an adjustable depth window so that imaging occurs only within a pre-selected region and the imaging sensor is able to ignore signals from outside this window. This process occurs at the image acquisition level, meaning the range camera simply doesn’t “see” objects outside the selected window. The solution is designed to minimise errors resulting from background interference, multi-path effects, scattering and reflections. The technique also reduces image processing requirements by simplifying the measured scene.

Applications

The technique is valuable to the following range imaging applications:

  • Gesture control for consumer electronics and gaming devices, when environmental factors such as reflections introduce measurement and detection errors.
  • Interactive advertising, for isolating the gestures of targets within a pre-determined scene.

  • Improves the accuracy of image captures by removing errors and distortions caused by multi-path and scattering interference.
  • Decreases likelihood of ambiguous measurements.
  • Reduces post-processing requirements by simplifying the measured scene.
