PORTABLE CYTOMETER

WaikatoLink are seeking collaboration opportunities with research organisation and/or industry to pursue commercial applications for this technology.

Portable Cytometer

Using lasers to count and identify cells has been around for decades but conventional technologies are characterised as being large and expensive. While blue lasers were historically expensive these have now been made incredibly cheap with technological advances and mass production due to the emergence of blu-ray disk players. Researchers at the University of Waikato are now using this technology to develop an ultra low-cost cytometer that can be used in the field as a portable device to count and analyse cells.

Applications

Formulations for the following indications are currently under development

  • Somatic cell counting within the dairy industry
  • Algal cell counting in water supplies
  • In-field analysis of spoilage organisms
  • Pollen analysis

USPs

  • A low-cost and portable cytometer device for in-field use
