Enhanced Surge Protection

Reliable surge protection devices for sensitive electronic systems are a set of moving targets. As more sophisticated high density integrated circuits enter the market, the individual transistor feature size (smallest dimension in individual transistors) keeps diminishing, while the number of transistors in a chip keeps exponentially increasing. This increases the vulnerability of state of the art electronic systems powered from the commercial AC power line to transients. Therefore more improved surge absorption devices are a continuing commercial need. In common transient voltage surge systems (TVSS) transient energy is absorbed by a combination of metal oxide varistors, gas discharge tubes and semiconductor devices. A supercapacitor-based enhancement can improve the overall effectiveness of a TVSS by absorbing any remaining energy. The potential remaining energy, which is statistical in nature, could still severely harm the protected equipment if an unexpected high level surge is received at the exposed end. This technology is an enhancement technique for commonly used surge protection systems using supercapacitors (SC).

Applications

The device is intended for the general surge protection devices market where higher energy absorption capability is required, particularly in severe lightning and power quality environments. The development will help introduce low cost and more reliable TVSS systems which could withstand higher surge voltages
